Illumination exercice: Letter A

This post is also available in: Français

After my illumination workshop, I bought what I needed to practice this new art at home. You can see all the tools I bought:

Since I can’t draw, I bought a flower alphabet coloring book by Theodora Gould (Amazon link).

To transfer the design onto my parchment, I used tracing paper. The design is A5 size, but the gilding only required one gold leaf since I was very economical. It was my first time doing it entirely on my own without a teacher, so the result is not perfect yet (not enough gesso, the gilding is not smooth enough), and the colors still look too much like “primary colors”… but at least this allows me to check that I have all the necessary tools, and now I just need to practice diligently. The goal is to create increasingly smaller letters.
