Since Brexit, many of us have hesitated to place orders on UK-based websites, because of customs fees and the hefty handling charges imposed by carriers.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that:
- If the product is of made in the UK and you have the proof of origin, there will be no customs duty thanks to the agreements between the United Kingdom and the European Union.
- If the website is well designed, you won’t pay VAT twice. You directly pay the VAT corresponding to your country (in France, it’s between 10% and 20%).
This is the case with Folio Society, a publisher of beautiful books. They have a section of the website reserved for the “rest of the world,” and the VAT is calculated based on your country, which makes your purchase and customs process easier.
To do this, visit their site and choose ROW (Rest of World).
If the book’s price is the same as in the UK, you will notice that the VAT and shipping fees will be applied when you provide your address. In the example below, a 5% tax has been applied. For the European Union, express delivery is mandatory. However, Folio Society regularly offers free shipping deals for purchases of 2 or 3 books.
Afterward, you will receive a DHL tracking link, and DHL will take care of the paperwork, knowing that Folio Society has already declared the origin of the products and filled in the necessary information.
Now, all that’s left is to enjoy your new books.
How about the rest of the EU?
Currently, they are not able to deliver to the following countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia
But don’t worry, you can ship your books to an international forwarding shipping company such as Shipito.
Create your account here and go to “my account” => choose Austria as the default Shipito address under “modify address book”.
Copy past your personal new Austria postal address and give it to Folio Society.
Your books will be sent to Austria first using this method. Shipito will receive them and forward them to you. You will only have to pay shipping fees to your country (Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia). Shipito uses Austria Post, so the fees will be reasonable and you don’t have to pay extra customs fees because it’s still within the EU. I hope it helps
