While researching silverware, I came across these pure silver (99.99%) leaves sold in China. I took advantage of my trip to Vietnam to bring some back. These are not expensive, between €5 and €7.
In the past, silver was a favored material in tea preparation, especially in Asia, because of beliefs tied to the antibacterial and purifying properties of silver ions. Some also believe that if silver changes color (turns black), it indicates the presence of poison. However, this method is not scientifically reliable. Silver used to tarnish due to the impurities in old poisons, which often contained traces of sulfur. That’s no longer the case today.
In traditional Chinese medicine, silver is also considered beneficial for the liver, the heart, and the immune system, although there is no formal scientific evidence to support this.
In short, even if there’s no scientific proof of silver’s health benefits, I’ve seen and used enough silverware around the world to feel comfortable dropping a 1g piece of pure silver (99.99%) into my tea cup. Here are the models I have:
