[Review] Drunk Elephant : A-Passioni™ Retinol Cream and C-Firma™ Day Serum

During my trip to the United States last year, I was able to get my hands on the miniature versions of Drunk Elephant. Their products are so expensive that I prefer to test them first before going broke.

So I bought two miniature kits :

  • Miniature Retinol Cream Duo A-Passioni™ + B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum
  • Duo Serum Vitamin C + B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum

As you can see, these two kits both contain the B-Hydra Intensive Hydration Serum but I will not review this serum as I find it quite commonplace. We will just focus on the two flagship products.

Drunk Elephant, what is it?

Drunk Elephant is an American organic brand. The founder had a lot of skin problems and couldn’t find cosmetics that corresponded to her needs. She then identified 6 ingredients, which she considers responsible for all our skin problems. Thus, all their products do not contain what they call the Suspicious 6™ (essential oils, drying alcohols, silicones, chemical sunscreens, fragrance/dyes, SLS: essential oils, drying alcohols, silicones, chemical sunscreen, perfume and sodium lauryl sulfate).

The name “Drunk Elephant” is said to come from a myth that elephants love marula fruit. The fermentation of these fruits, once ingested, makes the elephants a little drunk, hence the name.

– Retinol 1%: A pure form of vegetable retinol, cʼest one of the most sought-after ingredients in skin care that can bring balance to any skin concern. At a one percent concentration, retinol can significantly improve the look and feel of uneven skin tone and texture, as well as reduce damage caused by daily exposure to UV rays, pollution or other free radicals.
– Triple Peptide Blend: A powerful trio of peptides that visibly firms and strengthens, enhancing the anti-aging benefits of retinol.
– Vitamin F: Soothing fatty acids (linolenic and linoleic) that work to visibly improve skin texture and suppleness and calm signs of sensitivity.

My opinion on A-Passioni™ Retinol Cream

Usually, I’m still a bit reluctant to use retinol, especially since it is considered quite concentrated (1% retinol).

But this cream exceeded all my expectations. All it takes is a little bit of product for the whole face, followed by a good layer of moisturizer, and the next day my skin is all soft and smooth. I use it every other night and that’s enough. My skin doesn’t peel, there’s no tingling or unpleasant sensations. However, as with all retinols, you have to spread sunscreen on your skin the next day. More information on retinoids here

C-Firma™ Day Serum

Ingredients : Water/Aqua/Water, Dimethyl Isosorbide, Ascorbic Acid, Laureth-23, Glycerin, Lactobacillus/Pumpkin Ferment Extract, Sclerocarya Birrea Seed Oil, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Juice Extract, Phyllanthus Emblica Fruit Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Tocopherol, Lactobacillus/Punica Granatum Fruit Fermenting Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer, Hydrolyzed Quinoa, Phytosterols, Glutamylamidoethyl Imidazole, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Ferulic Acid, Acetyl Glucosamine, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tetrahydrobisdemethoxydiferuloylmethane, Tetrahydrodemethoxydiferuloylmethane, Tetrahydrodiferuloylmethane, Glycine, Leuconostoc/Radish Root Ferment Filtrate, Sucrose, Maltodextrin, Chondrus Crispus Extract, Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Isohexadecane, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylhydroxamic Acid, Caprylyl Glycol, Sorbitan Isostearate, Propanediol, Pentylene Glycol, Xanthan Gum, Butylene Glycol, Sodium Hydroxide, Chlorphenesin, Polysorbate 60, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Potassium Sorbate, Sorbic Acid, Ethylhexylglycerin.

– Powerful Antioxidant Complex (15% dʼacide L-ascorbic and dʼacide ferulic and 1% Vitamin E): Firms and brightens the look and feel of skin, while minimizing visible signs of photoaging caused by pollution and other environmental stressors.
– Pumpkin Ferment and Pomegranate Extract: These ingredients work together to provide enzymatic dissolution of dead surface skin cells, minimizing lʼapparence pores.
– Chronocycline: A chronopeptide that mimics the antioxidant benefits of vitamin D for younger-looking skin.

My opinion on C-Firma™ Day Serum

It’s a pity that the miniature version is only 8ml because I really like this vitamin C. Vitamin C(L-ascorbic acid) is bathed in ferulic acid and 1% vitamin E, like a product I like very much at SkinCeuticals. Studies have shown that this mixture helps to better preserve vitamin C and enhances the effects of this star ingredient.

Usually, vitamin C can make sensitive skin react, but this is not the case with this product.

The only drawback I have against it is that the texture is a bit too oily, which prevents me from using it in the morning. That’s why I still prefer Phloretin CF from Skinceuticals even if it costs twice as much as Drunk Elephant because its texture is more liquid, more watery. During the Covid, I had a really hard time finding Drunk Elephant products in Europe, that’s why I couldn’t buy the Vitamin C cream. I have had the retinol cream for almost a year and it is still half full. Soon I will have to throw it away because retinol doesn’t keep very well and it has to be thrown away 12 months after opening. In any case, I am delighted with these purchases and if you have the opportunity to travel to North America, opt for these mini kits, they cost around 23€/kit and allow you to test the products before opting for the full size (around 80€).
